Burlington, VT ( Defense Maven)–5 A local lawmaker has proposed the idea of disarming the Burlington police force, claiming that when officers carry duty weapons, they “escalate” the level of violence in the city.
Nope, armed police don’t escalate violence, if anything they are a deterrent.
“How much is the lethal force…is it really causing at the end of the day, more harm than benefit?” Burlington City Councilor Perri Freeman asked WPTZ.
Meet Perri Freeman.
Pretty much what you expected from someone who thinks peace keepers having weapons to defend themselves and others is the problem.
Freeman claimed that officers perpetuate violence when they carry their duty weapons.
Yeah, the cops are the ones starting all the problems.
“It actually escalates the violence in our communities,” the councilor declared. “It doesn’t encourage people to be less violent.”
Yes, it does encourage less violence.
During a recent council meeting, Freeman floated the idea of disarming officers so that they more closely resemble the unarmed police forces she witnessed during her time in Iceland, WPTZ reported.
That is truly the dumbest and most dangerous idea I have ever heard. Unarmed police will lead to more crime and put lives in danger.
Freeman acknowledged that police need firearms at times, but argued that such instances are very rare.
When was the last time a bad guy reserved a shoot out? Or does the unarmed cop just keep getting shot at until an armed one shows up?
“The day in and day out of police work is not engaging with that,” she told WPTZ.
Since when is police work routine? Anything can happen at anytime.
She said that the most important goal is to charge the culture of policing, and to alter practices that contribute to problems such as racial inequality.
She is in Vermont. 99% of the population looks like her.
Burlington Police Officers’ Association (BPOA) President Daniel Gilligan said there are “very few places in the world” that have opted to disarm their police forces – and for good reason.
“To show up to an armed incident unarmed?” he said in disbelief. “I can’t think of anything more disadvantaged than that.”
Freeman said that her proposal would not be “an overnight thing,” and that it would take time to change the way the police department operates.
“It’s a gradual program,” she told WPTZ. “It’s talking about how do we really shift and talk about doing things maybe differently in a way that might be better in the long run.”
It shouldn’t happen at all! Nothing good can come from unarmed cops.
Freeman also said that she did not intend to offend law enforcement officers with her ideas, and claimed her goal is to keep her constituents safe.
They are safe, thanks to armed police. The police aren’t the problem, its your constituents that intend to commit armed crimes that are the problem.
On March 15 2007 and armed man walked into a pizza shop in New York City. He shot and killed the employee in an armed robbery.
Two NYPD auxiliary officers heard the shooting, radioed for help and followed the suspect. Auxiliary officers are unarmed yet wear a police uniform. The suspect turned on them and opened fire. Nicholas Pekearo, 28, Yevgeniy Marshalik, 19, were both killed. The suspect was killed shortly after when he opened fire on armed police.
Two unarmed officers killed by one guy with a gun and no way to defend themselves. Think about that before you put unarmed cops on the street
